On this day January 16th in 1980 Paul McCartney had a less than pleasurable experience in Japan. Well traveling on tour the former Beatles member got caught with a half-pound of cannabis at customs. "When the fellow pulled it out of the suit case, he looked more embarrassed than me," McCartney said "I think he just wanted to put it back in and forget about the whole thing, you know, but there it was." After that he was arrested and sent to Tokyo Narcotics Detention Center. After being held for nine days as inmate No. 22 he was released. He's reason for trying to smuggle so much cannabis into Japan? "We were about to fly to Japan and I knew I wouldn't be able to get anything to smoke over there," McCartney said in 2004. "This stuff was too good to flush down the toilet, so I thought I'd take it with me."
